5 Seconds of Summer: 'She's Kinda Hot' is a 'Song of Revolution For Our Fans'
The band’s Ashton Irwin describes the new single as something “for us to give our fans a place to belong.”
5 Seconds of Summer is currently on the road supporting its debut album as well as a new single, "She's Kinda Hot," that was released late last week. The new tune previews the quartet's highly anticipated sophomore LP, and drummer Ashton Irwin discussed their sonic progression and recording approach on this week's episode of the Pop Shop Podcast (skip to 49:30 to listen).
"We'd always planned to push the guitars further than the first album, so we went into the second album knowing that we wanted to articulate the music in a way that we play it live, which is almost heavier," Irwin tells Billboard. "And it's kind of changed things to make it more interactive with an audience and better for an audience in a live experience, but we wanted to get that into our recordings, so we had that idea from the beginning."
"She's Kinda Hot" was co-written with Benji Madden and Joel Madden of Good Charlotte fame, and Irwin says that everyone was thinking about 5SOS's legion of screaming fans when they were putting the lyrics together.
"Basically we just went in with the Madden brothers to write some songs, and 'She's Kinda Hot' came out of it," he explains. "We kind of planned on it being a song of revolution for our fans, and we made up the lyric 'We are the kings and the queens of the new broken scene,' and the idea of the 'new broken scene' is of a revolution for our fans to get behind. It's almost for the misfits and stuff like that, and it's for us to give our fans a place to belong.
"The song tells a few stories of people who don't fit in," he continues, "and they're being pressured to fit in, in each verse. … And then it goes to the chorus saying we'll be all right, because and we're the kings and the queens of the new broken scene, and we're all together in this."
