Courtney Act describes the last year of her life -- since she was named runner-up on the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race -- as “such a period of growth” akin to a “cocoon.” But now, she says she’s ready to break out and “emerge” with her debut EP, Kaleidoscope, due out July 7.

Billboard has the premiere of the set’s first single, “Ecstasy,” which Act says was inspired by a euphoric night of dancing at Burning Man a few years ago. “There something about that night,” Act tells Billboard. She says a friend who was with her that evening “described it as a religious experience, and I agree.”

The thumpy dance cut -- with lyrics like “When I’m in my sacred space / I can feel you move through me / And when the DJ sets us free / We will be ecstasy” -- was written with the production team The Prodigal (“a group of really talented young producers and writers here in L.A.,” Act says).

“Ecstasy’s” music video was filmed in London two weeks ago, and directed by William Baker -- the longtime creative director for one of Act’s idols, Kylie Minogue. The clip is tentatively scheduled to premiere the week of June 1.

Act refers to Minogue as a “holy goddess,” and jokes that she recently purchased Minogue’s 1997 album Impossible Princess album on CD from Amazon.com, even though she doesn’t have a CD player. She says got the CD just to “have it, and look at it, and touch it, and smell it, and lick it occasionally, and be inspired by the holy goddess that is Kylie Minogue."

The seven-song Kaleidoscope set also features collaborations with Jake Shears of Scissor Sisters, and Sam Sparro. Shears and Sparro co-wrote “Body Parts” with Act, while Sparro and Act collaborated on the EP’s title track. Both songs were produced by Sparro (“as a producer, he’s quite the powerhouse,” Act says).

Act says she initially met Shears in the mid ‘00s at an event, and, after exchanging contact information, “literally bumped into him several more times on different continents.” Clearly, their friendship was meant to be.

Fans of Act are also in for a treat during the EP’s release week, as the entertainer will mount her first pop concert at New York’s Gramercy Theatre on July 10. The all-ages show’s tickets went on sale today (May 29).
