Jordin Sparks performs at Jeffrey Sanker's White Party on April 25, 2015 in Palm Springs, California.

"I feel like the timing is so perfect right now, for everything," says Jordin Sparks, who will soon release her first album since 2009. The former American Idol champ has previewed her new sound with the rhythmic single "Double Tap," and opened up about her "involuntary hiatus" from music -- as well as moving on from a very public breakup -- during a recent stop by Billboard's New York studios.

Watch Sparks discuss her new music and personal contentment below:

"When it comes to the heartbreak and whatever happened in my past, at the time I didn't talk about it because I was still hurting," says Sparks, who split with longtime boyfriend Jason Derulo last year but has recently begun dating rapper Sage The Gemini. "Now? I'm not hurting anymore. I don't live there, I don't live there in the past. I'm past it."

Sparks says that always wants to remain "open and honest" with her fans, and hopes to excite her diehard supporters with her latest batch of material. "To be able to have music, finally, after so long, is just exhilarating," she says.

The singer also opened up about "Double Tap" -- after teaching the new single's video choreography in the latest episode of Billboard's web series So You Know You Can't Dance. Check it out below:
