23 Million Songs, 6 Million Albums & More: One Direction With Zayn Malik, By The Numbers
Check out these unbelievable stats to understand just how dominant 1D was with Zayn.
Zayn Malik is officially out of One Direction, the group announced in a joint statement on Wednesday (Mar. 25), and have announced plans to move on as a quartet, with a stadium tour to continue and a new album due out later this year. However, Malik's exit marks as good a time as any to take stock of what 1D accomplished as a five-piece, following their X Factor run in 2010. Over the past half-decade, One Direction became one of the biggest groups on the planet, and the numbers reflect just how all-encompassing their place in pop music was before the unexpected exit.
Check out nine impressive statistics that show how massive Harry, Niall, Louis, Liam and Zayn were over the past five years:
Over 6.49 million U.S. albums sold. All four of One Direction's studio albums have debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, making them the only group in the 59-year history of the chart to see their first four albums bow at No. 1. Their top seller remains their debut album, Up All Night, which hit U.S. retailers in March 2012 and has sold 2.03 million copies, according to Nielsen Music. Last year's Four composes 942,000 copies to that total.
Over 23.7 million U.S. song downloads. Their biggest seller is "What Makes You Beautiful," the sunny lead single from the group's debut album Up All Night, with 4.75 million downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music.
Four top 10 hits on the Hot 100 chart. One Direction's highest-charting single in the U.S. remains "Best Song Ever," the lead single from 2013's Midnight Memories, which hit No. 2 on the chart. "Live While We're Young" peaked at No. 3, "What Makes You Beautiful" made it to No. 4 and "Story of My Life" went to No. 6.
Nineteen total songs charted on the Hot 100. One Direction's most recent hit is current single "Night Changes," which has peaked at No. 31 on the Hot 100 chart and climbs 52-45 on the new Hot 100. The song hits a new peak on the current Pop Songs airplay chart, up two spots to No. 14.
Over 3 billion combined YouTube views. The 13 official music videos listed on 1D's YouTube pages combine for over 3.3 billion views; "What Makes You Beautiful" sits at the top of those clips with 617 million views (and over 1 million comments!).
1 Top Artist of The Year Honor. In 2014, One Direction became the first multimember act to be named Billboard's top artist of the year since Destiny's Child in 2001. The band's tour, Midnight Memories album sales and social media performance (No. 9 on the year-end Social 50 chart in 2014) helped 1D achieve the top spot.
Over $290 million grossed on tour in 2014. In 2012, One Direction was supporting Big Time Rush on tour. In 2014, the quintet was responsible for the world's No. 1 tour, with 3.4 million total attendees brought in during the stadium trek, according to Billboard Boxscore. The Where We Are tour outgrossed tours by Justin Timberlake, the Rolling Stones and Katy Perry.
Over $28 million grossed at the North American box office. One Direction: This Is Us, the 2013 documentary about the group, is the fourth-highest grossing concert film ever, according to Box Office Mojo. The group also released One Direction: Where We Are - The Concert Film last year.
Three Billboard Music Awards won. All three trophies -- Top New Artist, Top Duo/Group and Top Pop Artist -- were won by the group in 2013. One Direction has also earned five BRIT Awards and five American Music Awards.
