Exclusive: Kawehi Premieres 'Creepy, Dorky & Shit-Talking' EP 'Evolution'

Ashley West Leonard

The self-released EP drops officially on March 17.

Kawehi's fans have been dying to hear her new EP. How do we know? The futuristic Kansas-based pop musician started a Kickstarter campaign to fund Evolution, which had received ten times its desired amount by its final day. Well, wait no longer -- here is Kawehi's latest, premiering exclusively on Billboard.com:

"Evolution is about a girl who used to be a robot and how she feels about the new world she lives in," Kawehi tells Billboard. "I think it's the most honest EP I've written to date -- which is both terrifying and liberating. In a world where glitz and facades are becoming more normal by the second, I enjoyed being myself while writing this EP, however creepy, dorky or shit-talking I can be. We're entering an interesting time -- where people are thirsty for authenticity -- and lucky for me, I couldn't be any less 'me' even if I tried."

Kawehi was lucky to have 987 great collaborators. One was her husband, Paul Wight, who collaborated with her on the songwriting, producing, and mixing process across the EP. The 986 others were her Kickstarter backers; each of them received a CD of the EP via orders she stuffed and mailed with her husband.

Kawehi first gained notoriety with her excellent YouTube covers -- especially her takes on Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box" and Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel." The latter has garnered over three million views and prompted Diddy to post it on his Facebook page, saying, "She's dope!!"
