Sia's 'Elastic Heart' Video is a Cage Match Between Maddie Ziegler & Shia LaBeouf
Remember 'Celebrity Deathmatch'? 'Elastic Heart' is like that, except tender and wonderful.
Sia's music video for her 2014 Top 10 hit "Chandelier" was staggeringly successful, managing to turn an elaborate dance routine from Dance Moms star Maddie Ziegler into 432 million YouTube views. Ziegler has returned to Sia's world of cracked pop tracks with soaring choruses, and for the new "Elastic Heart" clip, the pre-teen has been paired with pop culture lightning rod/sometimes-actor Shia LaBeouf. As expected, things get strange.
Ziegler is back in her nude body suit and blonde bob, but she's been transported out of her deserted apartment and into a giant metallic cage, with a shirtless, buff LaBeouf pitted against her. The entirety of the video features the surprising pair interpreting the song through various body contortions: they dance-fight, collapse in the middle of the cage, crawl toward and away from each other, and make some wildly fantastic facial expressions that Crazy Eyes from Orange Is The New Black would envy.
Ziegler eventually escapes the cage, and LaBeouf futilely screams for escape, but the 12-year-old returns to her partner to help him leave the prison with her. The final 45 seconds of the video are wordless, music-free and downright affecting.
"Elastic Heart" is Sia's latest single from 1000 Forms of Fear, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 albums chart last July. However, the song dates back to late 2012, when it was included on the soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and featured the Weeknd & Diplo.
Sia is nominated for four Grammy awards, including record of the year and song of the year for "Chandelier." The acclaimed singer-songwriter will likely perform "Elastic Heart" when she performs on Saturday Night Live on Jan. 17.
