James Blunt Confesses: ‘You’re Beautiful’ Became ‘Annoying’

James Blunt offered a mea culpa for his biggest hit "You're Beautiful," admitting after all these years that the treacly love song "was force-fed down people's throats" and that "it became annoying."

Blunt is under no illusions that he became pigeonholed as a certain artist: "I think, at the end of the day, I was marketed by a record company to appeal to women during Desperate Housewives' commercials and you lose 50 percent of the population in doing so." 

The English singer also said that his record company portrayed him in a way that was the exact opposite of how he was in reality. "The marketing also painted me out as an insanely serious person, an earnest person and, as all my friends know, I'm anything but," Blunt said. "I have a couple of over-emotional miserable songs that I’m known for, but I think it’s turned that corner now. People can see I don’t take myself that seriously."

"You're Beautiful" was co-written by Blunt, Sacha Skarbek and Amanda Ghost. It appeared on Blunt's 2004 debut album, Back to Bedlam.
