Ed Sheeran Announces Australasia Arena Tour
Ed Sheeran will set a new touring standard when he returns to Australia and New Zealand next year.
The British singer-songwriter has announced an eight-date trek that will see him become the first musician in 20 years to undertake a national headline arena tour completely solo; he'll hit the stage with just a loop pedal and his acoustic guitar. The late John Denver was the last to embark on an arena-scale tour of Australia without a band, when he visited these shores in 1994.
Frontier Touring is behind the Sheeran trek next March and April, which the promoter boasts will feature “no bells and whistles” and a relatively low ticket price.
Tickets for all shows will be available for Australian $99 ($87) plus booking fees, a slim sum compared with the prices Australians pay for the vast majority of frontline international performers.
“Ed wanted to ensure that his shows were accessible to all of his fans. It’s incredibly rare these days to have all tickets at one price in arena venues but Ed wanted to make it happen,” comments Michael Gudinski, head of Frontier Touring. Pre-sale tickets go on sale from Sept. 29 at frontiertouring.com/edsheeran and the general onsale starts Oct. 2.
“I applaud that Ed wants to look after his fans," Gudinski adds. "He remembers lining up as a kid to get good tickets and believes that any fan should have the chance to get the best seats, not just the ones with the most money. I wish more artists would take this initiative!”
This will be Sheeran’s fourth visit Down Under in as many years, and his biggest tour here to-date. All six shows on his first headline tour in 2012 sold out swiftly and his return visit in 2013 received a similar reaction with additional shows added to meet demand.
He performed six intimate shows in two days across Melbourne and Sydney earlier this year to celebrate his sophomore album x (Warner Music), which topped the ARIA Albums Chart following its release in June. Sheeran’s debut + spent a week at the chart summit back in August 2012. Sheeran and Tom Jones will perform this Saturday to more than 100,000 people for the AFL Grand Final festivities at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
