Exclusive: Listen to PROM's ‘Flickers,’ First Single From Ghost Beach's Crazy Heart Records
Electronic pop duo Ghost Beach memorably took to Times Square last year to ignite a debate on music piracy. Now, they’re teaming with indie-music distributor The Orchard for their own label, Crazy Heart Records, which will release its first single Sept. 16, PROM’s “Flickers.” Billboard has the exclusive premiere below.
The dreamy, drum-cadenced track shares a producer with Ghost Beach’s own frequent collaborator “Champagne” Dave Weingarten, who first played “Flickers” for the band before Crazy Heart had been formalized. “I immediately was like, ‘Oh man, we need to release this,” Ghost Beach frontman Josh Ocean says. “We’ve always wanted to create a community of cool, young up-and-coming indie groups that reminded me of the punk compilations we had when we were young, from Epitaph or Vagrant Records. Instead of a CD, what if we could create a community around all these great songs? PROM felt like the perfect group to launch something like that.”
PROM is prepping an EP for an October release through Crazy Heart, which plans to release new material from other artists by year’s end, and it won’t be confined to one genre. “The parameters are any music that fits our general vibe, since the Ghost Beach music ticks a lot of boxes,” Ocean says, “whether it’s indie, indie-pop, electro, tropical… the main thing is that we think it’s really cool.”
Colleen Theis, The Orchard’s chief operating officer, hopes to turn Crazy Heart into a monthly singles club once Ghost Beach wraps its current 34-date North American tour in support of its Nettwerk debut Blonde in November. “They have a very loyal audience, and when they’re marketing to those fans they connect in a very organic way. So if they’re telling Ghost Beach fans about an artist they support, there will be an audience for that,” she says. “They have super ears.”
