Selena Gomez on Controversial ‘Pray for Gaza’ Instagram Post: 'I Am Not Picking Any Sides’
Rihanna, Swizz Beatz and others have also weighed in on the Israel-Palestine conflict
Selena Gomez is the latest artist to weigh in on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict — and, of course, things got a little heated on social media.
The pop star received some backlash on Instagram Friday after posting a message that read, "It's About Humanity. Pray for Gaza."
“Please pray for those families and babies today. Please always remember what's important in life. It's not any of this. We are here to help, inspire and love. Be that change. #wearethenextgeneration,” Gomez wrote in the caption.
The message had received more than 545,000 likes at press time, but many of the 106K-plus commenters didn’t see eye-to-eye with Gomez on the conflict, which has reportedly seen death tolls climbing past 330 people. Others, however, praised the artist for the posting about the matter.
A few hours later, Gomez wrote a follow-up message on Instagram with a photo of a person meditating on water. “And of course to be clear, I am not picking any sides,” the singer wrote in the photo’s caption. “I am praying for peace and humanity for all!”
Gomez isn’t the only artist to express an opinion on the Israel-Palestine conflict.
On Tuesday, Rihanna tweeted "#FreePalestine" but soon deleted it. Sources claimed she accidentally tweeted the controversial hashtag, and the pop star herself soon tweeted an apology of sorts: "Let's pray for peace and a swift end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict! Is there any hope?"
Famed producer Swizz Beatz has also weighed in on the matter, tweeting, “I don't care what's the problem you don't just kill lil kids like that I pray for peace ASAP!!!!” And rapper Waka Flocka Flame tweeted his support for Palestine in no uncertain terms, writing on Twitter, “Damn how the FUCK MY COUNTRY ALLOW #PALESTINE SUFFERING… . PLEASE FATHER GOD GIVE THAT COUNTRY STRENGTH.”
