YouTube Star Troye Sivan Signs With EMI Australia, Announces EP
Singer/actor behind 'Fault in Our Stars' viral hit will release EP in August, first single is 'Happy Little Pill'
19-year old YouTube superstar Troye Sivan -- who has more than 2 million subscribers to his YouTube channel -- has signed with EMI Australia and is prepping the release of his first EP for the label.
The five-song set, "TRXYE," is due out worldwide on Aug. 15 and a limited edition CD is available to pre-order through his official site. (A digital pre-order is tentatively set to launch in late July.) The EP's tracklist has yet to be finalized.
"TRXYE" is led by its first single, "Happy Little Pill," which will see its video arrive in late July as well.
Representatives for Sivan say that "numerous labels" are interested in issuing the EP in the U.S., so it remains to be seen which will acquire the effort for its Stateside release.
Sivan has amassed 91.4 million views to his YouTube channel, where his third most-watched clip (3.2 million) is the video for his original song "The Fault In Our Stars" (inspired by the book of the same name). The track became a hit, earning 2.9 million plays on Sivan's SoundCloud, and selling 53,000 downloads in the U.S. according to Nielsen SoundScan. Sivan's assorted songs have sold a total of 87,000 downloads, led by "Fault."
Sivan wrote and recorded the upcoming EP around the world in the past year, since he signed to EMI Australia in June of 2013 (on his birthday, no less: June 5). However, he kept the record deal a secret to his millions of fans until announcing it via his social networks today (June 26).
"I've spent the last year working with the most incredible producers and writers in the most incredible places," Sivan said in a YouTube video announcing the EP. "I wrote over 40 songs and it has been the most intense and insane journey."
