Diane Warren, David Foster, Sia Among Collaborator’s for Baz Luhrmann’s 'Strictly Ballroom' Musical
Director Baz Luhrmann and co-writer Craig Pearce have announced the team of composers contributing songs to their upcoming stage venture, Strictly Ballroom: The Musical.
Grammy-winning Songwriters Hall of Famers and multiple Oscar nominees Diane Warren and David Foster have penned tunes for the show, as has Australian singer-songwriter Sia Furler, better known by her recording moniker Sia.
Luhrmann also has enlisted Sydney-based producer and composer Elliott Wheeler, with whom he worked on the soundtrack for The Great Gatsby, and local singer-songwriter, actor and comedian Eddie Perfect.
Based on Luhrmann's 1992 breakout first feature, an uplifting romantic comedy about a champion-level ballroom dancer who risks his shot at glory by partnering with an untrained amateur on an unorthodox routine, the musical will include songs indelibly associated with the movie, such as "Love Is in the Air," "Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps" and "Time After Time."
Set and costume design on the show are by Luhrmann's wife and regular collaborator Catherine Martin, a two-time Academy Award winner for her work on Moulin Rouge. Martin is also a double nominee in this year's Oscar race for her production and costume design on The Great Gatsby.
Produced by Global Creatures (King Kong) and Luhrmann's Bazmark banner, Strictly Ballroom: The Musical begins preview performances March 25 at Sydney's Lyric Theatre, with official opening night set for April 12.
