Katy Perry Surpasses Lady Gaga on Twitter, Becomes Most Followed Female

The ongoing footrace for the biggest following on Twitter takes a new turn, as Katy Perry has surpassed Lady Gaga to becoming the social network's most followed woman. Perry's account currently has 39.8 million followers.

Lady Gaga, meanwhile, slides to become the third most-followed person on Twitter with 39.2 million followers. The number one spot still belongs to Justin Bieber, who surpassed Lady Gaga in January 2013 and currently boasts 42.2 million followers on the platform.

Other wildly popular musicians on Twitter include Taylor Swift, who is the 5th most followed person on Twitter with 31.1 million followers (right under President Barack Obama’s 34.5 million). Rihanna currently stands at No. 7 with 30.7 million, Britney Spears at No. 8 with 29.7 million, and Justin Timberlake at No. 10 with 23.3 million.

Lady Gaga's "ARTPOP" album is due out in November, and on Thursday, the singer became the first confirmed performer at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. Perry, meanwhile, will return to the stage after a quiet first half of 2013 with a performance at the 2013 iHeartRadio Music Festival in September.
