Why Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello's Pop Partnership Is So Powerful
On the new Pop Shop Podcast, we also dive into chart news from Madonna, Bruce Springsteen & Taylor Swift.
There’s just something about the pairing of Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello that perks up the ears of pop fans. The two stars have teamed up for a second single, as “Señorita” dropped on June 21 -- three-and-a-half years after their last collaboration, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”
On the new episode of the Billboard Pop Shop Podcast (listen below), we discuss why Mendes and Cabello’s partnership is so potent. Fans clearly love seeing the friends-turned-collaborators making beautiful music together, and now it seems that the duo has come full-circle with “Señorita.” In 2015, when “I Know What You Did Last Summer” was released, both performers were at a very different place in their careers. The track went on to hit No. 10 on the Pop Songs airplay chart and No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, and now that the two are arena-filling pop superstars with a grip of hits under their belts (not to mention four Grammy Award nominations between them), there's no telling how high "Señorita" might make it on the charts.
In addition to the Mendes and Cabello chatter, the Pop Shop Team chats about big chart news from Madonna and Bruce Springsteen (back together at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart for the first time since 1985) and how Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, has blocked yet another single from hitting No. 1 on the Hot 100. Which single? Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down.” (That’s the second Swift single that Lil Nas X has prevented from reaching No. 1, following “Me!,” featuring Brendon Urie.)
