Grohl celebrates the band ranking as the No. 1 act in the Alternative Songs chart's 30-year history.

Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week's special guest is Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who chats with Billboard's rock chart manager Kevin Rutherford. The band reigns as the No. 1 act in the Alternative Songs chart's 30-year history, with Billboard today unveiling the tally's all-time top 300 songs and top 100 artists.

"You have to write great songs. That's it," Grohl muses on the podcast. "To me, the challenge was always trying to craft a song that was simple in a way that people would connect to it emotionally. Even just a melody … that's a funny thing. A lyric is one thing, but there's something that a melody can do … just the sound of a minor scale, or a major scale rising in a chorus. The notes will twist your heart.

"That's the Rubik's Cube, trying to find a melody and lyric will braid together and create four minutes of memory that you'll have for the rest of your life."

Of the band's route to earning top honors among all acts in the Alternative Songs chart's archives, Grohl says, "We've been lucky. We have this divining rod that we've followed for 24 years, and it takes us where we think we should go."

Adds RCA Records senior vp of promotion Dennis Blair, who has worked with the group for two decades, "The Foos have written the biggest hit songs that have become soundtrack moments of our lives. I know of no other band that works harder to rock your face off in concert every single night."
