Plus: Taylor Swift & Garth Brooks chart chat & (you've been warned) a Halloween ghost story.

It's the Chart Beat Podcast (as the theme song goes), where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, Gary and Trevor welcome Andrew Gertler, manager of ascending pop star Shawn Mendes. As the first manager to appear on the podcast, Gertler explains what the job entails and traces Mendes' rise from Vine cover singer to Billboard chart-topper. Still just 19, Mendes has already crowned the Billboard 200 albums chart with Handwritten in 2015 and Illuminate in 2016.

Meanwhile, in August, "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back" peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Mendes' third top 10 on the tally. The song, sporting noticeably grittier vocals, could also serve as a preview as to where his sound is headed. "I think Shawn has more and more figured out his lane and has been able to develop, 'This is who Shawn Mendes is,' " Gertler says. "I think Illuminate was the jumping-off point for that.

Mendes has been "listening to a lot of Kings of Leon," Gertler adds. "He started with just him and an acoustic guitar on stage; he's [since] put a great band together. He very much, I think, sees his future path as being a great frontman, and I think that 'Holdin' Me Back' is a good indication of where it's going to go. It's exciting."

Also, a look ahead to Taylor Swift's potentially lofty debut on the Hot 100 next week with "Gorgeous," the third song unveiled so far from her Nov. 10 album Reputation, and kudos for Garth Brooks' first Country Airplay top 10, and first Hot 100 hit, in 10 years, "Ask Me How I Know." Plus, just in time for Halloween, Gary and Trevor treat you to a ghost story, as well as two classic graveyard smashes.
