Atop the Hot 100 for 10 weeks, can "Despacito" tie – or pass – the record 16-week reign of "One Sweet Day"?

Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.

This week, Gary and Trevor discuss whether Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," featuring Justin Bieber, can break the record for the most weeks spent atop the Billboard Hot 100. The song leads the July 29-dated list for a 10th week, moving closer to Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's record 16-week reign with "One Sweet Day" in 1995-96. Gary and Trevor look at how big a lead "Despacito" currently boasts over its closest competition (DJ Khaled's "Wild Thoughts," featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller) and analyze other fairly recent lengthy leaders and how far ahead they stood in their 10th weeks on top to try to predict the current No. 1's staying power. Plus, Hit Songs Deconstructed's Dave and Yael Penn return to breakdown the songwriting and production elements that have helped make Sam Hunt's "Body Like a Back Road" such a pop and country hit; the song leads the Hot Country Songs chart for a 23rd week, moving to within a week of matching Florida Georgia Line's record 24-week command with "Cruise" in 2012-13.

"What it's all about, with hit songs in general," says Dave, "is about reinforcing key aspects of a song in the listener's head without them becoming overly monotonous. And that's what 'Body Like a Back Road' does so well: it's very memorable, but it's not overly redundant."
