#AlternativeFacts Podcast: Baio

What’s the greatest popular rock band of the 21st century?

Billboard writers debated the big question in a recent staff survey and on the latest episode of our alternative music podcast, that discussion comes to life! #AlternativeFacts host Chris Payne is joined by music editor Jason Lipshutz and senior associate editor Andrew Unterberger, as the trio sings the praises of bands like Paramore, Arcade Fire, Linkin Park and Vampire Weekend and shares their personal rankings.

And that’s not all -- this week’s #AlternativeFacts features an often-hilarious interview with a member of one of those esteemed bands! It’s Chris Baio, bassist of Vampire Weekend, who recently announced his second solo album (as just Baio, mind you). In fact, this was his first interview to promote the new album: Man of the World drops June 30 on Glassnote Records, and the affable Mr. Baio swung by Billboard’s New York office to discuss the Bowie- and Brexit-inspired long player.

“I moved to London four years ago and I’ve been an American living in London for that time,” explains the former New Yorker. “I got to this point where the only thing I was reading was the news and the only way I could focus on something that wasn’t the news was to make another record… I call the record Man of the World because I was traveling the world… but also because I was really fearful for the direction the world was taking.”

He also gave some encouraging words on the status of Vampire Weekend’s mysterious, work-in-progress fourth studio album:

“I wouldn’t be putting out [my solo record] if the Vampire Weekend record were imminent, but it’s definitely coming, and I think everyone should be excited for it.”

But is it really going to be called Mitsubishi Macchiato? Listen to the podcast below:
