#AlternativeFacts Podcast: Fall Out Boy Seeks Another Hit, Charly Bliss' Debut Is Awesome

Fueled By Ramen fans, rejoice -- new Paramore and Fall Out Boy songs have been released in back to back weeks. On the first episode of Billboard’s #AlternativeFacts podcast, we dissected Paramore’s “Hard Times” -- what makes the new single so damn catchy and its real-life chances of becoming a bona fide hit. Fall Out Boy returned with “Young and Menace” Thursday (April 27), a brand new single with an extremely different sound, yet similarly lofty ambitions. Host Chris Payne and friends are here to break down its outlook on the charts.

“When they came back, they came back with the song they should’ve come back with,” says Billboard rock charts manager Kevin Rutherford, referencing 2013's “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).” “It was grabbing. It what they needed to assert themselves in the 2010s. ‘Centuries’ was also that song.”

So how will the left-field EDM drops of “Young and Menace” stack up? We’ve got plenty of insight into Fall Out Boy’s chances on radio right now.

Outside the mainstream, Charly Bliss are a band to watch -- especially after dropping their debut album Guppy last Friday (April 21), a must-listen. Later in the show, Stereogum managing editor Michael Nelson joins us to introduce the hook-happy, Blue Album-indebted Brooklyn punk band. “They’re all really young -- in their early 20s -- and they’re playing this music that really references the mid ‘90s in a way that’s kind of surprising to me,” says Nelson. “It seems almost impossible to me they’d be able to understand this music that well.” For more, check out Stereogum's Album of the Week feature on Charly Bliss' Guppy.

And there’s much more! Listen above to find out why it’s already a “make-or-break” week for “Hard Times” on Billboard’s charts, why our expectations are high for PVRIS’ forthcoming second album and for some inside tips on a couple of new bands poised to break big on alternative radio.
