Latin Connection Podcast: Piso 21 Talks Forthcoming Album, Maluma Collaboration & More
Piso 21, the four-member band who met 10 years ago at a friend's apartment on the 21st floor (which gave name to the group), dropped their self-titled debut album back in 2012. That year, they also received a Latin Grammy nomination for best new artist -- an important moment in their career but also an eye-opening experience. "Unlike many artists who think after a nomination they've reached a good place in their careers, we felt as though our goals were far more out of reach," band member El Profe tells Billboard's Latin Connection Podcast.
"When we get to the ceremony, we see artists like Juan Luis Guerra, Alejandro Sanz, Santana, people who had a long trajectory, and we told ourselves, 'Whoa, we've got a long way to go. We haven't accomplished anything still.' It's like we arrived to Las Vegas with a lot of enthusiasm and we left with so many doubts but knew we had to keep trying."
Five years later, Piso 21's comeback includes star-studded collabs with Nicky Jam and Maluma and a "renovated" sound -- a fusion of pop and urban/reggaetón beats.
"We've spent all these years trying to find ourselves and our style, and we've finally found ourselves and the type of music we've been wanting to do."
