It’s a good time to be Into. It Over It. Last month, the Chicago band wrapped a North American headlining tour in support of its excellent 2016 album Standards. On the road with a hand-picked barrage of first-rate openers, IIOI recently played its most well-attended headlining show ever, an April 22 gig at New York’s Irving Plaza. Evan Weiss and company have been at it almost ten years, and they’re still trending upward.
The frontman wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’ve never made the same record two times in a row,” Weiss says. “There’s something unpredictable about what Into It. Over It. is going to do at a given time.” Chatting with Billboard’s Chris Payne on the Alt In Our Stars podcast, Weiss and drummer Josh Sparks explained how this restless revision fuels their constant push forward. The goal? To play “as technical as possible, to where people who are musicians can notice how insane the playing [is],” Weiss says. “But people who don’t know anything about music can still really latch on… I want people to know that we know what we’re doing.”
