Courtney Barnett performs onstage during day 2 of the 2016 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival Weekend 1 at the Empire Polo Club on April 16, 2016 in Indio, Calif.

Courtney Barnett has given us a bit of new music since dropping her breakthrough debut album last year and she’s already thinking about its follow-up. We caught up with her the morning of her set at Coachella’s first weekend to see what she's been up to.

“I’ve been writing short stories over the last couple years which are a bit more fictitious,” she says. “Some of them have been turning into songs.” When she’s not touring, Barnett has been kicking it around her home in the suburbs of Melbourne, Australia, taking walks, pondering the meaning of life, and thinking about what’s next. She isn’t ready to say when to expect the album (it appears to still be in its early stages), but she's definitely been busy.

11 Best Moments From Coachella 2016

Barnett was nominated for Best New Artist at the Grammys this February, an incredible, audience-expanding -- but potentially fish-out-of-water -- moment for an artist coming from a punk and DIY background. Fortunately, she's pretty well-adjusted: “I make all my friends refer to me as the Grammy-nominated Courtney Barnett, but aside from that everything’s totally normal.”

That’s a joke, but it’s not like she didn’t come out of the show with some great stories. What was it like walking the red carpet behind Taylor Swift? What was it like taking in Kendrick Lamar’s transcendent live performance? Barnett talked about all this, in addition to explaining some slang from the Australian burbs. Check out the podcast below:
