Maceo Parker, Oddisee and The Waterboys Among Artists to Play Barcelona Jazz Fest
Diana Krall will open the 49th edition of Barcelona’s two-month fall festival on Oct. 17.
Piano facing piano, Cuban greats Chucho Valdes and Gonzalo Rubalcaba will perform together at the upcoming Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival, one highlight of an enticingly eclectic two-month long program that also includes performances by saxophonist Maceo Parker, rapper Oddisee, the Chick Corea-Steve Gadd Band, Trombone Shorty, Avishai Cohen, flamenco singer Estrella Morente, and The Waterboys, whose new album, Out of All This Blue, has been announced for September.
Tony Visconti and David Bowie drummer Woody Woodmansey’s Bowie tribute group Holy Holy will perform songs from The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars in Barcelona on Nov. 3. Diana Krall is scheduled to open the 49th edition of the highly anticipated annual fall festival on Oct. 17.
The festival will spotlight flamenco, with a series of concerts by some of the Spanish music’s most notable contemporary artists, including Niño Josele, Tomatito Sexteto, José Merce, Antonio Carmona and Rocio Marquez.
Sparkling Afro-Cuban singer Dayme Arocena, acclaimed soprano Barbara Hendricks, Anglo-Argentine singer-songwriter Kevin Johansen and the unexpected duo of Japanese pianist Hiromi and Colombian harpist Edmar Castañeda are among other artists slated to appear. Concerts at different venues in the city will be complemented by a series of master classes given by festival artists.
For the first time, Barcelona Jazz Festival organizers offered a sort of summer teaser concert this year, presenting a sold-out concert by mind-blowing jazz rejuvenator Kamasi Washington this past week (June 24). Go the festival website for more program information.
