Coachella 2017: StubHub Data Reveals Increased International Attendance, Fest-Goer Habits & More

The desert stage is set and fans are gearing up for the first weekend of Coachella 2017 (April 14-16), which features a diverse lineup including Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga, Radiohead, Lorde, Future, Bon Iver and more.

Secondary ticket market giant StubHub released some interesting statistics about Coachella attendees, including the amount of fans coming from overseas, which non-Coachella artists fans would like to see perform, and what other music festivals are popular among Coachella-goers. They also shared some advice for fans hoping to purchase last minute tickets.

This exclusive data dives deep into the secondary ticket market, revealing that the first weekend of Coachella is drawing a huge International audience with sales up 125 percent from last year. Seventeen countries are represented with most international fans hailing from Canada followed by the U.K., Australia, Mexico and the Netherlands.

Domestically, StubHub has sold Coachella passes to fans in every state in America, with California residents representing 67 percent of the sales, followed by New York, Arizona, Texas and Nevada.

StubHub’s number crunchers also took a deep look into which artists Coachella fans would like to see make a surprise appearance at the fest. Red Hot Chili Peppers lead the way, which is very unlikely as the SoCal rockers are on tour on the East coast this weekend playing in Atlanta and Raleigh, NC. Other artists on the list include Kings of Leon, Twenty One Pilots, U2, Bruno Mars, and The Weeknd, who is the most realistic choice since he has collaborated with Coachella act Future on tracks like “All I Know” and “Low Life.” It’s also worth noting that the Canadian singer doesn’t kick off his tour until later this month, so his schedule could be conducive to a surprise appearance.

Over the past five years, fans that bought tickets to Coachella via StubHub were most likely to attend San Francisco’s Outside Lands Festival. Other popular music festivals amongst the crew are Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Hard Summer and Stagecoach, the country music festival that takes place on the same polo grounds as Coachella.

Don’t fret, you eleventh hour revelers. StubHub has a local last minute ticket pickup location, not far from the concert site in Indio, California, with wristbands available at a moment's notice. Fans can also buy or sell wristbands at the Indio StubHub office during the course of the weekend at a reduced rate.

That’s good news for anyone who wants to attend just one day of the festival, rather than the entire weekend. As of press time, Coachella wristbands for weekend one are going for $530, with weekend two passes running $375.

StubHub urges fans to only use secondary market ticket companies that accept credit cards. You should also make sure the company has a toll free customer service number where you can reach a live person in case anything goes awry. They advise to never pay cash for concert tickets.

Based on StubHub ticket sales, Coachella 2017 is set to be the most successful in the history of the event, which began in 1999. Each year ticket demand increases and the first weekend alone is up 60 percent from last year. So you may have to sweat it out a little longer this year while you patiently wait in line at the Craft Beer Barn.
