After a decades-long career, Billy Idol still knows how to keep things fresh at his shows. The British pop/rock legend, who surprised the iHeartRadio Music Festival audience by bringing Miley Cyrus to the stage to duet on “Rebel Yell” with him Friday night (Sept. 23), tells Billboard that he “brings alive” real events from his life every time he performs live onstage.

“The great thing is, most of the songs, I've written them myself, so they're from my own experience,” Idol said backstage at the festival in Las Vegas.

“That means I'm drawing, really, on my own personality, events in my life that have happened to me. There's always something in them I can bring alive -- whether it's the sweat or the sex or whatever it is, I can bring it alive,” he said.
