SXSW Spotlights Mexican Stars Gloria Trevi, Intocable and Luis Coronel Alongside Emerging Artists
Luis Coronel, Intocable, Gloria Trevi to join a slew of under-the-radar Latin American bands down in Austin.
SXSW has over the years has become known as one of the best ways for indie bands from Latin America and Spain (and everywhere else) to get a foothold in the United States, with artists often making their U.S. debuts at the Austin festival. This year, Spain will continue its popular paella party, and Latin Alternative showcases abound. But, like the rest of SXSW, the Latin music program will include big name acts, spotlighting three Mexican stars: Gloria Trevi, Luis Coronel and Intocable.
Pop singer Gloria Trevi, a veteran of both the Billboard charts and a Brazilian prison, will appear Tuesday (March 17) as part of SX's day program, in conversation with Billboard's Leila Cobo. Gloria, a new feature film about Trevi's colorful and controversial public life, will have several screenings this week.
Trevi, who last year Trevi's told Billboard she didn't want to involved in the project, will now support it. The SXSW showing will be the film's premiere in the U.S. With real-life telenovela will also become an unauthorized biopic, a wide release slated for June.
Nineteen-year-old singer Luis Coronel, who in 2014 became the youngest solo artist in 13 years to hit No. 1 on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart, will perform in a showcase at Emo's on Friday night (March 20). Expect a young crowd from Austin and beyond to pack this show, which will feature L.A. DJ J Rhythm, Mexican-American hip-hop group Kinto Sol, and Cuban singer Diana Fuentes, in addition to the Regional Mexican heartthrob.
The innovative Norteño band Intocable, who last month topped the Latin Albums chart for the seventh time with their 20th anniversary album, will headline an "All-Latino" showcase on the Auditorium Shores Stage on Saturday (March 21). Intocable will be joined by SX regulars Bomba Estereo and by producers/DJs Toy Selectah and Camilo Lara, who will be presenting their latest project, Compass.
