Growing up in Chicago to Mexican parents in the early '90s meant that music by Los Temerarios, Grupo Límite and Banda Machos was blasting through our speakers on a typical Saturday morning.
Unlike many of my family members who were embracing American music and artists then, my parents stuck with their grupero and norteño anthems maybe as a way to feel closer to home or perhaps to defy any societal expectations of assimilation.
Back then, I resented not being too familiar with the music that was popular on the radio, but now, I can only thank them for raising me in a household that, through music, celebrated our Mexican roots.
