Latin Artist on the Rise: Juanfran’s Road to Stardom, From Spain’s Canary Islands to the Billboard Charts

Pablo Díaz

After kicking off his music career in 2019, Juanfran, short for Juan Francisco, was ready to conquer the world. Hailing from Gran Canaria, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, the up-and-coming artist planned to expand his music in countries such as Chile, Argentina, Canada and the United States.

Suddenly, everything came to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But Juanfran’s dreams did not stop there, ultimately putting his music on an international map, becoming a viral success on TikTok and landing on the Billboard charts in 2020.

“I’m just a kid from Gran Canaria,” he tells Billboard. “I began singing when I was four, next to my dad who would always sing at the family parties, and then I began writing my own music when I was 11.”

With his sugary, crisp vocals, Juanfran has captivated music lovers, bringing his romanticism to the Latin urban scene. “I used to sing pop but I feel more identified with urban music because I’m still able to fuse pop and R&B, which I also like.”

Looking up to artists such as Daddy Yankee, Sebastian Yatra, Christian Castro, and Reik, Juanfran first gained attention on social media with his freestyle and covers.

Now, at 16, he earned his first Billboard entry with “Como Llora,” fueled by its success on TikTok, where it counts with nearly one billion post creations. The single peaked at No. 27 on the Hot Latin Songs chart-dated July 18.

“I never thought this song would be a hit,” he says. “The fans are the ones who make the song viral but you also need a great team to succeed. I honestly thought this song was going to reach 20 million views on YouTube and that was it.”

“Como Llora,” released in February via DN7 Music, is co-written by Juanfran and Justin Quiles and produced by DJ Luian and Mambo Kingz. Its lyrics tell the story of a man who’s ready to fix a lady’s broken heart. Seven months after its release, Victor Manuelle jumped on the track giving it an infectious salsa treatment.

“Anyone who knows about music and loves salsa knows that Victor is a great man and artist,” he says. “I haven’t been able to meet him in person, we’ve only communicated through Instagram but I feel very honored.”

Juanfran, who also has a collaboration with Jowell called "Alarma," is signed to DN7 music and managed by David Navarro. Mr. & Mrs. Entertainment, at the helm of José Vallejo, oversees the American market.
