The Latin Recording Academy unveiled its nominees for the 20th annual Latin Grammy Awards last month, coining Alejandro Sanz as this year’s top nominee with eight mentions, followed by compatriot Rosalía with five nods.

Although urban artists such as Bad Bunny, Ozuna, Daddy Yankee and De La Ghetto received nominations, those artists -- along with Maluma and Natti Natasha -- called out the lack of urban music in the main categories, expressing that “without reggaeton, there’s no Latin Grammys.” Their protest, as J Balvin simply stated, is “for the culture and the movement.”

In response to the social media comments, the Latin Recording Academy released a statement that noted: “We invite the leaders of the urban community to get involved with the Academy, to get involved with the process, and to get involved with discussions that improve the Academy."

Despite the controversy, many urban acts have received deserving nominations this year, including in the best urban music album category. The nominees are Anitta’s Kisses (Warner Music), Bad Bunny’s X 100Pre (Rimas Entertainment), De La Ghetto’s Mi Movimiento (Warner Music Latina, Inc.), Feid’s 19 (Intu Linea/UMLE) and Sech’s Sueños (Rich Music).

The 2019 Latin Grammys will air live Nov. 14 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas via Univision. With the awards sneaking up on us, Billboard wants you to vote for your favorite album below.
