Antonio Banderas is rehearsing a Spanish production of the Broadway classic A Chorus Line that will open a new theatre in his hometown of Malaga, Spain.

Banderas is co-directing and will appear in the show, a passion proejct of his, scheduled to inaugurate the Teatro del Soho CaixaBank in the middle of November, with the exact date to be announced soon.

The show is to run until the beginning of the year then will tour to other cities in Spain and, possibly, Banderas says, to the United States.

The 59-year-old actor will play Zach-the character who directs the audition that is at the center of the show-in the Malaga performances of the musical. He is directing the musical together with New York actor and choreographer Baayork Lee, who participated in the creation of the original Chorus Line, in 1975 (the character Connie Wong was largely based on her own story).

Banderas won the Cannes Best Actor Award earlier this year for his starring role in Pedro Almodovar’s autobiographical movie Dolor y Gloria (Pain and Glory), which premieres in the United States on Oct. 4.
