Residente, Cuco, La Santa Cecilia and Guatemalan poet and hip hop artist Rebeca Lane are among the artists scheduled to appear at a "day of cultural resistance against white supremacy" in El Paso, announced by the Border Network for Human Rights (BNHR).
"We are calling on our sister communities across the country to join us in an exercise of collective compassion and solidarity on September 7,” Fernando Garcia, executive director of BNHR, said in a statement, which convoked the gathering as a response to the El Paso mass shooting and the rise of white supremacist violence and political activity.
The #ElPasoFirme event will include a march and musical performances. Residente, the outspoken rapper who was a prominent voice of the Puerto Rican revolt that resulted in the resignation of Gov. Ricardo Roselló, is scheduled as one of the day’s speakers.
"El Paso Firme means we are united as we move forward, with firm steps and clear vision," Erika Andiola, chief advocacy officer at Refugee And Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) said. RAICES is co-organizing the day-long action with BNHR, National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON), Reform Immigration for Texas Alliance (RITA), Repairers of the Breach, and the Poor People’s Campaign. "We know that as long as we continue fighting for our rights, we will prevail against the reactionary and racist views strangling our country."
The event follows #ElPasoFirme vigils that were held in El Paso and around the country on Aug. 7.
"El Paso was not just another shooting. This was fueled by a climate of hatred, white supremacist beliefs, and anti-immigrant bigotry motivated from the highest office in the nation, the White House," said Garcia of BNHR, referring to the shooter's manifesto, which mimicked President Trump's words in citing an Hispanic "invasion" of Texas.
