Becky G Opens Up About Her Mexican-American Roots in 'Growing Up Latino' Episode

Becky G took the Growing Up Latino hot seat to talk all about her Mexican-American background and being a Latina in the music industry.

In the new episode, the “Sin Pijama” singer says her favorite Spanish slang is “pero like,” because it’s like having one foot in both worlds.

Becky, who was born and raised in Inglewood, California and is Mexican-American, emphasized that being a Latino artist in the music industry is very empowering. “I’m very proud of my roots and where I come from,” she says. “We are put in the position to choose which world we want to exist in. I grew up in both worlds [simultaneously],” she adds, feeling grateful that many people of her generation can relate.

Becky also answers some fun questions, such as her favorite game as a child and her ultimate indulgence. “I love food, I love lots of food. I love all kinds of food,” she admits, stating that aguachile, a spicy shrimp ceviche dish from Mexico, is the one thing she craves the most.

“Growing up Latino means everything to me,” she continues. “It has taught me so many things. Just culturally speaking, just our way of being with our family. How passionate we are, how driven we are, the will to want better not just for ourselves but for our whole family, it’s a true testament to our culture and it inspires me every single day,” she proudly concludes.
