The song that Spain will send to Eurovision 2019 will be elected live at a reality song contest Operación Triunfo gala on Jan. 20.

Spain’s Televisión Española (TVE) will broadcast the election of the country’s entry for the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest during a live broadcast this Sunday (Jan. 20). The winning song is chosen via a special edition of Operación Triunfo, TVE’s long-running reality music competition, a pioneer in the reality talent show field.

The 10 songs in the running – sung by the special edition Operación Triunfo contestants – adhere to characteristic Eurovision pop. The romance is less cloying than in past years, and there is more influence from the Latin dance rhythms that have recently invaded Spain’s charts. Echoes of Luis Fonsi and Ricky Martin can be heard, and one track, “La Clave” Natalia Lacunza," takes clues from Rosalía in its quest for success.

Universal Music Spain has released an album of songs up for Spain’s Eurovision spot, available today (Jan. 18) on digital outlets. The winner will be decided by audience vote.

Eurovision’s 2019 edition is set to be broadcast from Tel Aviv May 14-18. Spain’s 2018 entry, "Tu canción," sung by Amaia & Alfred, came in 23rd out of 26 contestants in the popular vote of the annual competition that many television viewers love to hate.
