On Nov. 30, Ricardo Montaner dropped his new single “¿Que vas a hacer?” with a surprising video starring J Balvin and Lali Esposito. The toughest part of this project, according to Montaner, was keeping it a secret for a month.

The music video, directed by Marlene Rodríguez Miranda, tells the story of two lovebirds, played by J Balvin and Lali, who grow apart and go their different ways. Montaner, who acts as the narrator of this visual masterpiece, is also going through a heartbreak as he travels alone with his luggage. “The music video needed a couple to tell the story of the lyrics,” Montaner says to Billboard. “Marlene suggested I invite two singers to act in it and we began brainstorming.”

But the answer was a phone call away. “At that moment, [Montaner's sons] Mau and Ricky sent me a Whatsapp video of J Balvin dancing to my song. Then they called me with Balvin on the call, who told me that he loved the song and would’ve loved to collaborate with me in it,” he says. It was then when Montaner invited Balvin to be the lead actor in his video.

Finding the lead actress was also a piece of cake. “We invited Lali to the video because we’ve known her for a long time, she’s a close friend of my children,” he says.

The filming of the music video took place on Oct. 30 in Miami, just one month before it premiered. “It was challenging to keep it a secret,” Montaner admits. “The day before the launch, photos from the video leaked, but luckily no one suspected anything. The video has gotten very good reactions, becoming No. 1 in many Latin American countries.

“¿Que vas a hacer?,” which has garnered nearly 10 million video views, is a romantic ballad with flairs of urban beats. Produced by reggaeton producer “Tainy,” Montaner assures that his new music stays rooted in his Latin pop rhythms but with modern sounds.

“I continue doing ballads, but the hints of pop or urban that Tainy adds to my new project gives my music the possibility to transcend to a new generation,” he says, stating that unlike before, his music is making the rounds in many contemporary radio stations. “That makes me very happy.”

In addition to the success of his new single and video, Montaner is also happy that his sons Mau and Ricky, and his daughter, Eva Luna, are following in his footsteps.

“I’m extremely happy to see Mau & Ricky doing what they have worked for so long. I’ve seen them grow not only as their father, but also as an artist,” he says. “As for Eva, she’s working in a Nickelodeon musical series called Club 57, where she also produced the soundtrack. It’s a taste of what’s going to happen with her career.”

In a nutshell, Montaner concludes: “As a dad, I feel very proud of having planted the love and passion they have for music.
