Soccer Superstar Leo Messi Inspires New Cirque Du Soleil Show
Soccer superstar Lionel Messi will serve as the inspiration for a new show by Cirque du Soleil, set for debut in 2019.
“It feels both crazy and incredible that Cirque du Soleil will create a show based on my life, my passion, my sport,” the Argentine FC Barcelona astro said in an announcement from Cirque du Soleil.
Messi has partnered with Cirque, Sony Music and Argentina’s PopArt Music, which was also behind Cirque’s recent show based on rock group Soda Stereo. The show’s musical elements have not yet been revealed.
The show will “leap into the passionate world of football,” according to Cirque, and “celebrate Messi’s legacy in Cirque du Soleil’s signature way, highlighting the rich culture that makes this sport the most popular worldwide.”
“We are thrilled to be working with such a living legend,” said Jonathan Tétrault, president and chief operating officer at Cirque du Soleil. “We are convinced that bringing Messi’s legacy to life on stage will touch audiences and speak to all football fans. Together with PopArt Music and Sony Music, we have the chance to transcend the sport and present it in a totally new form to inspire the world.”
Sergio Lavié, co-founder of PopArt Music, summed up the goal of the show: “I am sure that this show will break all records, in the same way that Messi does in football.”
"Leo Messi inspires the world with his talent on the soccer field and as a person," said Afo Verde, Chairman & CEO of Sony Music Latin Iberia, and an avid soccer fan. "This is a show that will be enjoyed by sports and arts fans around the world."
