Marc Anthony Blasts Trump After 'Unsung Success' Speech About Puerto Rico: 'These Lives Are in Your Hands'
Marc Anthony did not hold back on Tuesday in a sharply worded Instagram post, slamming President Trump for claiming that his administration did a "tremendous" job in the wake of last year's devastation in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.
"Mr. President: How the FUCK is a reported death toll of 2,975 Americans in Puerto Rico (that's right, AMERICANS!) an 'incredible, unsung success'?" Anthony wrote.
The singer, born in New York to Puerto Rican parents, added, "You promised to clean the swamp but instead made it a cesspool. Disgusting. These lives are in your hands."
The "unsung" quote was a reference to comments made by Trump during an Oval Office meeting Tuesday about the government's preparation for Hurricane Florence, which is bearing down on the East Coast of the U.S. as a Category 4 storm promising massive destruction. When a reporter asked Trump if there were any lessons his administration picked up from the widely criticized FEMA response to Maria, Trump said, "The job that FEMA and law enforcement and everybody did, working along with the governor of Puerto Rico, I think was tremendous. ... I think Puerto Rico was an incredible, unsung success." He added, "In a certain way, the best job we did was Puerto Rico, but nobody would understand that. I mean, it's harder to understand."
Success? Federal response according to Trump in Puerto Rico a success? If he thinks the death of 3,000 people os a success God help us all.— Carmen Yulín Cruz (@CarmenYulinCruz) September 11, 2018
Trump doubled down Wednesday morning (Sept. 12) in a tweet, in which he said his administration had done an "unappreciated great job in Puerto Rico, even though an inaccessible island with very poor electricity and a totally incompetent Mayor of San Juan," referring to San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz. A year after Maria, the island's government raised the official death toll from 64 to 2,975. Trump was widely criticized in the wake of Maria's landfall for FEMA's initially slow response to the massive damage caused by the storm, with late-night comedians mocking a photo opp in which Trump blithely tossed rolls of paper towel to islanders whose homes were wiped out.
Anthony and ex-wife Jennifer Lopez created "Somos Una Voz" (We Are One Voice) in September 2017 as a relief initiative backed by an alliance of celebrities “working together to rush food, shelter, medicine, power and communications to areas affected by recent natural disasters” in the wake of Maria and a subsequent 7.1 magnitude earthquake in Mexico. Among those who joined the alliance were: Alejandro Sanz, Alex Rodriguez, Alex Sensation, Bruno Mars, Caila, Chayanne, Daddy Yankee, Ed Sheeran, Fat Joe, Fonseca, Gente de Zona, J Balvin, Jada Pinkett Smith, Jessy & Joy, Kany Garcia, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Luis Fonsi, Maluma, Magic!, Nacho, Narciso Rodriguez, Nicky Jam, Paul Simon, Pitbull, Prince Royce, Ricky Martin, Romeo Santos, Vin Diesel and Yandel.
Anthony was not the only one who took Trump to task for his claims about the Maria response.
No, @realDonaldTrump – the Hurricane Maria response was NOT an "incredible unsung success.” Nearly 3,000 US citizens in Puerto Rico died. I've spent a year pushing your Administration on its many failures there. You need to face reality and do your job. https://t.co/0Uhf5gMRKL— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) September 11, 2018
After @realDonaldTrump touted an “unsung success” in #puertorico we just confirmed an airport runway-full of FEMA bottled water going to waste nearly a year after Hurricane Maria.— Bill Weir (@BillWeirCNN) September 12, 2018

Notice Trump folk talking point abt him calling Puerto Rico “unsung success”: If you criticize that assessment you’re saying the first responders suck. Actually by refusing to acknowledge reality, trump is forcing them and those doing the work around him to own his bad decisions— Christopher C. Cuomo (@ChrisCuomo) September 12, 2018
"INCREDIBLE UNSUNG SUCCESS" . Like the Hindenberg?— Dick Cavett (@TheDickCavett) September 11, 2018
Wonder if the #PuertoRico families who lost 3,000 loved ones in #HurricaneMaria think #Trump’s recovery efforts were an ‘incredible unsung success.’ As they brace for another possible storm & power loss threats AGAIN, U think they agree the govt’s response was fantastic? #TeamDl— DL Hughley (@RealDLHughley) September 11, 2018
“I think Puerto Rico was incredibly successful… I actually think it was one of the best jobs that's ever been done with respect to what this is all about... I think Puerto Rico was an incredible unsung success.”— Ricky Davila (@TheRickyDavila) September 11, 2018
-Predator trump praising himself for the death of thousands. Evil.
Trump tweeted this morning he did a "great job" handling the hurricane crisis in Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, new estimates put the Hurricane Maria death toll at nearly 3,000. What a disgrace. pic.twitter.com/AWrMijSa0K— Bernie Sanders (@SenSanders) September 12, 2018
