'Mamma Mia'! Ednita Nazario To Play Lead In Puerto Rican Production of the Musical
Puerto Rican star Ednita Nazario will play Donna in the Puerto Rican version of Mamma Mia! The musical, produced by Puerto Rico’s Fundación Arturo Somohano, will be staged October 27 and 28 at Centro de Bellas Artes de Santurce.
“Donna Sheridan is a rocker mom like me,” said Nazario (who has one daughter) in an interview with Puerto Rican daily El Nuevo Dia. “She’s a bit crazy, has a pretty licentious, fun life because of her temperament, her nature, the times."
"Mamma Mia! is wonderful," she continues. "I saw it on Broadway and I thought one day I wanted to play that role because she’s like me, like the women who’ve dedicated their lives to music and have children, dreams and many things they still have pending.”
Having Nazario play the lead character of Donna makes sense: The singer not only has a powerful voice, but also did a stint on Broadway as Esmeralda Agron in The Capeman, the Paul Simon-produced musical that also starred Marc Anthony. Although the controversial play had a limited run on Broadway (68 performances), Nazario’s role as the mother of convicted killer Salvador Agron garnered her a Theater World Award.
