The 2018 ASCAP Latin Music Awards, held March 6 in New York City, were full of music and emotion.

With established acts like Vicente García and Karol G performing along with up-and-comers like Lola Jane, who sounds like a bilingual Amy Winehouse, and Ella Brickell, who sings and plays trumpet.

And then, there were also the emotional speeches.

“I feel a lot of responsibility with the Vanguard Award,” said producer/artist Eduardo Cabra, who received his honor from Afo Verde, the chairman/CEO of Sony Music Latin America/Iberian Peninsula. “As musicians we have a responsibility to be honest, and not only with the chords. We have to be vulnerable, acknowledge things that make us hurt and that make us happy. live my life as I live my music. There are no two Eduardos.”

Cabra was not the only emotional voice of the evening.

“If I speak I’ll start crying,” said an emotional Randy Malcom Martinez, one half of Cuban duo Gente de Zona, who won the ASCAP Golden Note Award. He ceded the microphone to his musical partner Alexander Delgado, who praised Cuban musicians as well as the superstars who mentored Gente de Zona in their beginnings.

“I want to thank composers everywhere especially those in my country, who have had to go through a lot to allow us to be where we are,” he said. “Enrique, Pitbull, Marc Anthony, God bless you all,” he added.

Regional Mexican singer/songwriter Joss Favela won songwriter of the year for the third time, and reggaeton/trap star Farruko won songwriter/artist of the year for the first time.

The Latin song of the year award went to “Despacito.”
