SESAC Unites With La Industria to Talk Music's Digital Navigation in Colombia

More than 100 songwriters attended a seminar in Medellin, Colombia to learn and discuss the fast-changing digital music world as part of a daylong seminar presented by performance rights organization SESAC and the well known production and management company La Industria, Inc., whose roster of star talent includes Nicky Jam and Saga WhiteBlack.

Those who attended the event were provided with information about the latest music industry trends, legal topics and how to best approach their own careers in a business world that often moves quickly.

"By joining forces with La Industria Inc., we accomplished our goal to educate Colombian songwriters and publishers about performance rights, digital monetization and marketing," said Celeste Zendejas, director of SESAC Latina. "It was a very successful and educational day for the Latin Music Industry."

Zendejas welcomed the attendees and David Daza, legal and business affairs director for La Industria, spoke at length about publishing in terms of songwriters receiving credit and making sure their work is officially recognized and recorded.

"By uniting with SESAC we have provided my songwriters with information that will help them become stronger leaders the music world," Daza said. "We see this as an opportunity to support the careers of many writers from Colombia and beyond. We see things like this happening more often."

Key participants during the seminar included La Industria artists, producers and songwriters: Saga y Sonic, KZO, Joel, Julian Turizo and Manuel Turizo. By participated in conversations about personal experiences in an industry that continues to grow immensely and more than ever has the biggest global reach through social media.

Eliezer Ponce, SESAC Latina associate director, gave an explainer of royalties and dove into the mechanical and digital differences, registering work and making a business from original compositions. Laura Mendoza, manager of the Colombian division of international music distributor Altafonte, spoke about digital marketing and key strategies in today's marketplace.

Adrian Harley, YouTube and Google Play's Head of Music Publishing Partnerships for Latin America, gave a deeper understanding of music platforms and understanding and protecting intellectual-property rights in addition to providing information about music promotion and best approaches to utilizing data and its impact.

YouTube Music also sponsored a party in Medellin, which gave everyone an opportunity to network and have some one-on-one interaction.
