Gerardo Ortiz, Paulina Rubio & More Record Spanish Version of 'Where Is the Love?': Exclusive
The song will premiere during Premios de la Radio.
The Black Eyed Peas’ 2003 anthem “Where Is the Love?” is getting a Latin redo with a new, Spanish-language version featuring a slew of Latin personalities, including Wilmer Valderrama, Rosario Dawson, Ryan Guzman, Becky G, Kate del Castillo, Pepe Aguilar, Paulina Rubio and Gerardo Ortiz, among many others.
The song, with Spanish lyrics by Edgar Cortazar, will be performed live for the first time during the 2016 Premios de la Radio, at which time the music video will also premiere. Premios de la Radio, the annual regional Mexican music awards, will air live on Thursday on Estrella TV.
Inspiration for the Spanish version comes from a recent redo of the track, which was released in September and featured dozens of celebrities, including Jamie Foxx, Ty Dolla $ign, Mary J. Blige, Diddy, Justin Timberlake and Usher. The new version didn't enter the Billboard Hot 100 but did peak at No. 20 on the Pop Digital Song Sales chart.
The new Spanish-language version of the video includes 59 names, spanning many genres of music and many disciplines. It will also include appearances by the Black Eyed Peas’ Taboo and apl.de.ap.
The show version of the track won’t feature all the artists, but those confirmed to appear include Luis Coronel, Becky G, Gerardo Ortiz and Chiquis Rivera.
The idea to redo the track in Spanish came from Liberman Broadcasting, the Burbank, California-based media company whose holdings include Estrella TV. The company was in the midst of a “Yo soy el voto” (I Am the Vote) campaign, geared at getting the community to vote. Doing a remake of the song seemed to be the perfect culmination of the campaign.
The video for the song, directed by Michael Jurkovac, was recorded between Hollywood and Mexico to accommodate the many names included.
“The Spanish version of ‘Where Is the Love’ is a testament to Estrella TV’s commitment to continue being a voice for Latinos in the U.S.,” said Lenard Liberman, CEO, LBI Media, in a statement.
In a series of videos that have been put online in the past day, several artists spoke about the meaning of the song.
“We want to send a positive message to the world,” says Gerardo Ortiz. “This song seeks to find something positive in the negative.”
