Domenic Marte Scores His First No. 1 on Tropical Songs Chart With 'Como Quisiera'
Singer Domenic Marte earns his first No. 1 on the Tropical Songs airplay chart (dated Oct. 8) as “Como Quisiera” hops 3-1 in its 13th charting week (up 14 percent in spins in the week ending Sept. 25, according to Nielsen Music).
Marte spoke to Billboard about reaching No. 1, saying, “We are really happy. For us it’s humbling after so many years of fighting. It’s not an easy road but we always keep trying.”
Marte made his Billboard chart debut in 2007, on the Tropical Songs list, with “Deseos De Marte,” which peaked at No. 5. His previous chart peak came in 2012 when “Muero de Ceolos,” featuring Luz Rios, reached No. 4.
The Boston-based artist, who began his career 14 years ago as a pop act before crossing over to tropical music, recalls his inspiration to make the switch. “It’s funny, I remember my dad telling me, ‘You are Puerto Rican and Dominican, you have this in your blood. You’ve been listening to this all of your life,’” adding, “It’s amazing what happened to my career when I did that.”
Among tropical radio stations, Washington, D.C.’s WLZL championed “Como Quisiera” with 78 weekly spins. The station has been a continuous supporter of the track since first playing it in June.
"Since day one "Como Quisiera" has not only has been at the top of our Mscore Reports, but is a song that gets continuous requests," says the station's assistant program director, Candy Cintron.
Adding her thoughts as to why the track is connecting with listeners in the market, "He has that sultry tone in voice with a ballad-like sentiment that makes you feel that you've heard this song before even if you haven't! Its a familiar feel,"
