Latin Grammy Award winning songwriter Andres Castro renews his contract with Sony/ATV Music Publishing

Songwriter producer Andrés Castro, who in the past year has co-written many of Carlos Vives’ greatest hits, has renewed his contract with Sony/ATV’s Latin division.

Under the new deal, Castro and his publishing company, Baluarte, will continue to be represented worldwide by Sony/ATV, whose relationship with Castro goes back more than a decade. During that time, Castro’s career has been on a steady upswing.

A guitarist by training, Castro -- who began his career as Vives’ guitarist -- gradually evolved into production and songwriting. Over the past decade he’s written or co-written hits for the likes of Prince Royce (“Darte un beso,” which hit No. 1 on Hot Latin Songs), Ricky Martin, Natalia Jimenez and Vives, with whom he co-wrote many of his greatest recent hits.

Thanks in large part to those new Vives hits, Castro was ASCAP’s Latin Songwriter of the Year in 2014.

“He has an amazing instinct honed from his years as a producer and instrumentalist to know just what to say and write when the time comes to create the next hit single,” said Jorge Mejía, president of Sony ATV Music Publishing for U.S. Latin and Latin America.

For Castro, who was born and raised in Colombia but now lives and works in Miami, the songwriting process is about far more than inspiration. “Composing is about a little bit of talent and big percentage of decision-making,” he told Billboard in 2014. “You can’t settle for a phrase or with any element that deep down you know isn’t exactly right. I imagine García Márquez wrote many subpar phrases, but only the right ones made it into his books.”
