Puerto Rican Rapper Cosculluela Signs With Warner: Exclusive
Puerto Rican rapper Cosculluela has signed an exclusive recording contract with Warner Music Latin, Billboard has learned.
Cosculluela arrives at Warner after scoring his first top 10 single on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart -- “Te Busco,” with Nicky Jam, peaked at No. 9 on Hot Latin Songs in January.
The Warner deal is the first major affiliation for Cosculluela (real name Jose Fernando Cosculluela Suarez), who will also keep his indie label, Rottweilas Inc., separate from his recording deal.
“I always said I didn’t want to sign with anyone, but Warner came with a great offer and they’ve supported us in every way,” said the rapper.
The first album to be released under the deal is Blanco Perla (Pearl White) due out next month. The set, originally conceived as an EP, has been expanding in the past few months and now includes collabs with the likes of Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee and Ñejo.
The recently released video for the first single, “La boda” (The Wedding), features images from Cosculluelas’ real-life wedding, and has amassed over 3 million YouTube views in less than a month. The track, romantic and personal, provides a rare romantic look into a rapper known for grittier fare.
Cosculluela has had five releases make it onto Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. His first was 2009’s El Principe, which debuted at No. 3, his highest-charting position. That set was released in tandem with Siente, a now defunct JV with Universal Music Latino that had signed Cosculluela to an international licensing deal via his management’s label.
The Warner deal is different in that it’s a straight-ahead artist recording deal.
Cosculluela continues to wear many hats. Aside from Rottweilas, he has a clothing and baseball cap brand called Paper Voice.
“I consider myself an entrepreneur. I live with the business,” he says.
