In keeping with a long tradition of featuring groundbreaking music and collaborations, this year’s Billboard Latin Music Awards will ratchet things up a notch, focusing on duets for their 2016 edition.

The “Billboard Duets” version of the Billboard Latin Music Awards is a first for the show, and a first for any music awards show in recent memory.

But the notion of featuring unique collaborations has long been a feature of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which are known for their innovative pairings. Past stellar performances include Alejandro Fernandez with Julio Iglesias, Juan Gabriel with Los Trio, and last year, the landmark performance of Jennifer Lopez with Los Dinos, Selena’s band.

In addition, the show was the first to include collaborations between English- and Spanish-speaking artists, including Diddy and Daddy Yankee, Alicia Keys and Arturo Sandoval, Wisin with Sean Paul and, last year, Luis Fonsi with Afrojack and Ne-Yo.

The move toward duets comes at a time when collaborations are more prevalent than ever in the Latin music world. This year’s finalists for Hot Latin Song of the year, vocal event, are Farruko feat. Shaggy & Nicky Jam for  “Sunset”; Maná featuring Shakira for “Mi Verdad”; Nicky Jam and Enrique Iglesias for “El Perdón”; and Gente de Zona feat. Marc Anthony for “La Gozadera.”

The Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will air live on the Telemundo network April 28 from the BankUnited Center in Miami, are the culmination of the Billboard Latin Music Conference, taking place April 25-27 at the Ritz-Carlton in Miami Beach.

The awards honor the most popular albums, songs and performers in Latin music, as determined by the actual sales, radio airplay, streaming and social data that informs Billboard's weekly charts.
