World, meet Daniela Rojas. The 25-year-old Barranquilla native is conquering the hearts of Chinese people after winning a local reality singing competition on BTV.

Known in China as Bai-ling, Rojas has lived in Beijing for the past eight years. After singing in youth choirs in Colombia and later studying business and finance in China, she got her start singing in an international band called Los Cinco Continentes. One of the songs she’d always get asked to sing was “Tabaco y Chanel” from Bacilos, a big hit with the local crowd. “Chinese people love salsa,” she tells El Heraldo, adding, “they get so excited when they hear Latin music.”

Eventually Rojas formed her own band and sang everything from Latin rock to jazz -- in Mandarin. That’s when the television show, which translates to I Am Melody from Chinese, came calling. Among 10 finalists, Rojas was the voting public’s No. 1 pick after her stirring rendition of a beautiful ballad in Mandarin, which translates to “You Exist in My Song.”

Rojas speaks and sings in Chinese, English, and her native Spanish, and her vision for her music is definitely global. “I want to make Latin music in Chinese,” she told the Colombian site.

Her Chinese name translates to “sweet, singing bird” and the by the sounds of it, it’s a fitting moniker:
