Video premieres in advance of Afro-Spanish singer's new album

Conscious pop singer Jason Mraz and Afro-Spanish chanteuse Buika make a beautiful (if unexpected) couple on “Carry Your Own Weight,” a song included on Buika’s album Vivir Sin Miedo, out Friday.

Buika Bares Her Soul & Body in New Book

The just-released video for “Carry Your Own Weight” illustrates the existential and inspirational message of the track, on which Buika and Mraz both have songwriting credit, with a common story of first-world despair. That’s affecting enough, but what makes this more than another heartening self-help song is the vocal chemistry between Mraz and Buika. Mraz, who carries much of the song, plays straight man for the global music diva’s day-after voice. She proves here to be as compelling to listen to in English as she is in Spanish. But it's her flamenco inflections, riffing on flamenco rock group Pata Negra’s vintage song “Pasa la Vida,“ that really give the bilingual track soul.
