Why Did Will Smith Congratulate Bomba Estereo on Latin Grammy Nods?
Following the announcement of the 16th annual Latin Grammy Awards nominees (on Sept. 23), Will Smith shared a Facebook photo congratulating Colombian band Bomba Estéreo on its nods -- racking up nearly a quarter-million likes in 24 hours.
While it's not immediately clear as to how Smith is acquainted with Bomba, or where the photo was taken, the unlikely musical pairing makes us wonder if he'll team up with one of Latin America’s most eclectic acts. Perhaps it was a chance encounter on a movie set? Or backstage at a festival? Could the band be working with Smith’s musician kids Jaden or Willow? Could Smith have been blasting Bomba's latest album Amanecer all summer long like we have?
What is for certain is that the group, led by vocalist Li Saumet and founding member Simon Mejia, is up for record of the year for “Fiesta,” and best alternative music album for Amanecer at this year's Latin Grammys. They're relatively new to the charts, although the band has gained notoriety in Latin America over the years. Amanecer debuted at No. 7 on Latin Pop Albums chart dated June 20, 2015, while the set's lead single “Fiesta” reached the top 10 of Latin Pop Digital Songs (March 28).
On the other hand, Smith, who has not released new music in 10 years, has an extensive history on the Billboard charts, including two No. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 – first with “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” (three weeks, 1998), and then “Wild Wild West,” featuring Dru Hill and & Kool Mo Dee (one week, 1999). He has sold 9.5 million albums in the U.S., according to Nielsen Music.
Representatives for both acts did not respond to a request for comment -- but one can only dream that a collaboration is waiting in the wings.
