Which 'La Banda' Judge Will Be the Crowd Favorite? Vote!
The buzz around La Banda is at an all-time high leading up to the Sept. 13 premiere. Univision’s new reality singing competition will search for the ultimate Latin boy band with the help of three superstar judges: Ricky Martin, Laura Pausini and Alejandro Sanz. Considering the contestants will come from the U.S., Mexico, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Puerto Rico, it’s a nice, well-rounded panel.
However, as in every reality singing competition, there’s always a favorite judge -- someone who conquers the hearts of the masses with their wit, charm, and heartfelt, yet technically sound advice (we miss you on The Voice, Shakira!). And while we fully expect Martin, Pausini and Sanz to have great chemistry as a trio, it’s also fun to analyze them individually to see what their strengths are in this scenario.
Chances are they’ll each win a special place in our hearts, given that they’re all seasoned pros in the art of judging international reality singing competitions.
The former Menudo bandmember, who also serves as executive producer of the series and will manage the winning group, knows all about being in a supergroup. He also knows firsthand what it’s like to deal with the pressures of showbiz while growing up in the public eye. "My main concern is how they do on the inside,” Martin told People en Español recently. “There’s other people who handle the exterior, the image, the hair. I will deal with how they’re feeling on the spiritual side, in their mind, in their hearts.” Cue the collective “Awww!” Of course, as their manager, Martin will likely instill the ever-important element of discipline in them.
Watch Martin talk about what makes the show unique:
We can see the Spaniard being the more serious of the three, and the one focused on all the nitty gritty technical stuff. Should anyone bust out a guitar, they’d better be ready for some honest feedback from Sanz, who has very high standards but whose dry humor comes through in the most unexpected and subtle ways. “I was told ‘no’ many times,” Sanz told People en Español. “As long as they keep fighting they’ll never lose.” The lisp gets him some cool points for sure, as heard on this promo video:
Speaking of Spanish accents, the Italian pop goddess has one of the most endearing ones we’ve heard, but don’t underestimate her ability to keep it 100. She recently said in a promo video for the show, “I hope, like Ricky and Alejandro, to find the band of the future -- a real, Latin band that can break barriers. We are looking for something authentic.” And if anyone appears to get too cocky, we’re counting on Pausini to bring them back down to earth. “The guys of La Banda need to be humble and understand that winning is only the beginning,” she told People en Español. Also, we’re hoping she can give the boys some style advice, being that she always looks flawless.
