Nicky Jam, Daddy Yankee Win Big at Premios Tu Mundo
Some of the hottest names in Latin showbiz converged at Miami’s American Airlines arena on Aug. 20 for Telemundo’s Premios Tu Mundo, where fans vote for their favorite music, TV and social media stars.
Yankee had bragging rights for favorite urban artist and fan club of the year for his loyal DY Army, while fellow Puerto Rican Nicky Jam cinched the “party-starting song” trophy for his “El Perdón” smash (a win he shares with his duet partner Enrique Iglesias) as well as a special Warrior Spirit award in recognition of his musical resilience.
“Thank you Puerto Rico for giving me flavor and talent. Thank you Colombia for giving me a second chance,” he said while accepting the Warrior Spirit award. Later, when he took the stage to receive his “party-starting” honors, he thanked his kids profusely, as well as the fans who have stood by him during the good times and the bad.
Born Nick Rivera Caminero, 34-year-old Nicky Jam is one of Latin music’s best comeback stories. A reggaeton artist who found success in the late ‘90s and early 2000s during the genre’s first golden era, Caminero battled drug and alcohol addiction before he hit his peak, all of which derailed his musical career. A move to Medellín in 2010 exposed him to new producers and collaborators, sparking a creative rebirth of sorts, and paying off in a major way.
Caminero received the award from fellow Puerto Rican Olga Tañón, who opened the show with a merengue-flavored performance of her new single “Vivo la Vida.”
In a gesture of unity, Daddy Yankee shouted out Caminero during his acceptance speech for the “fan club of the year” award. “I love you, papa,” he said to the “El Perdón” singer, who took the stage toward the end of the night to perform his biggest hit to date.
The night was big on urban-flavored duets, with Farruko and Alejandra Guzman serving up a sizzling performance of their new collaboration, “Adiós,” flanked by dancers. An equally seductive Yuri took the stage with Yandel later in the evening.
Victor Manuelle offered up a salsa number “Agua Bendita,” while vallenato-pop queen Fanny Lu performed her new comeback single “El Perfume.” Her fellow Colombian J Balvin also had his moment to shine, performing his new futuristic single “Ginza.”
Introduced by the hosts as “the queen of Latin pop,” a masqueraded and always fashionable Paulina Rubio rocked the stage with her latest single, “Mi Nuevo Vicio.” Jencarlos Canela, Banda MS and Regulo Caro were also among the night's performers.
