The teen singer and writer/producer extraordinaire's collab takes over Latin Rhythm Airplay. Plus, Optimo and Luis Fonsi make notable moves
Newcomer Becky G climbs to No. 1 on Latin Rhythm Airplay with "Can't Get Enough" (featuring Pitbull), marking the 17-year-old singer/rapper's first Billboard format chart-topper. The song, which boasts both an English and Spanish version, also grants rapper Pitbull his fifth No. 1 on the chart. The coronation additionally scores the track's producer, Dr. Luke, his first No. 1 on any Latin ranking. Becky G, who is of Mexican descent, has been a protégé of Dr. Luke since he signed her to his Kemosabe Records imprint in 2011.
Dr. Luke (born Lukasz Gottwald) has been a force in pop music for a decade, having written and produced 16 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1s for such stars as Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Ke$ha, Katy Perry and Britney Spears. His most recent leader also involved Pitbull: "Timber," featuring Ke$ha, ruled for three weeks earlier this year.
"Can't Get Enough" enters Hot Latin Songs as the Hot Shot Debut at No. 10. Per chart policy, in order to maintain its standing as a Spanish-language-based songs chart, only download sales of the Spanish version will count toward Hot Latin Songs, as will airplay accumulated by either version on Nielsen BDS-monitored Latin Airplay stations. In addition, a portion of streaming points are incorporated, mirroring the song's ratio of Spanish-to-English weekly download sales. On Latin Airplay, the track leaps 21-2, climbing to 10.7 million audience impressions, a 90 percent surge. A music video for the song is expected to be released on VEVO shortly.
Becky G is set to be a supporting act on a handful of Katy Perry dates on her Prismatic World Tour, which includes two shows in Mexico in October.
OPTIMO ON TOP: Bachata singer Optimo also scores his first Billboard chart-topper, as "Duele" rises 3-1 on Tropical Airplay. The song is the first official single from his set "Amor De Guerra," due June 17. The song grows by 32 percent in plays, with WXDJ Miami leading in spins (68) during the chart's tracking week. A recently released remix of the song featuring urban star J Alvarez has helped champion it on-air.
Optimo previously existed as a band under different formations, but has since been continued as a solo effort by vocalist Alixandro R. Sanchez under the same moniker.
'8' IS 2: Pop star Luis Fonsi debuts at No. 2 on Top Latin Albums with "8," which sold 5,000 copies in its opening week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The release marks his seventh top 10 on the list in his 15-year chart history.
On Hot Latin Songs, where Fonsi has posted 10 top 10s, including six No. 1s, the set's first single, "Corazon En La Maleta," steps 23-22, nearing its No. 21 peak established last month. The track jumps 16-12 on Latin Airplay with 6.8 million audience impressions, a 12 percent rise.
